Helleborus prefer alkaline, medium wet, well-drained, organically rich, fertile soil. Plant them on a raised spot to admire their nodding flowers and so the heavy seeds will spread downhill. Try to decide on a good home early, as Helleborus does not like to be moved. Tolerates summer heat, humidity and dry conditions, but protect from winter winds.

Lenten Rose is an old-fashioned favorite, gaining new popularity as its beauty and usefulness are re-discovered. It has 16" basal leaves, divided into 7-9 leaflets. Its flowers appear in late winter or early spring; they are saucer-shaped, a lovely soft rose color. Effective in a woodland setting, massed, or in a mixed border, and sure to be admired.
