This depends if you want a sit-on-top kayak or a sit-in, and also if you want a recreational / touring kayak or whitewater kayak. I'm most familiar with leisure / tourism kayaks. For sit-on-tops, I recommend the Kayak "Ocean" brand. For sit-in kayaks, I recommend Dagger and Perception kayaks. They have many models, with a wide variety of options. Good luck! I disagree with the other answer … I think you can easily get away with a boat to begin … I have a kayak that I bought because I like to paddle in the ocean. The better I in the sport, the happier I am with waves and currents. However … I live about an hour from the ocean, and less than 5 minutes from a river. So my "ocean" boat and spend a lot of time on the rivers near my home. I also need enough room for a craft weekend and found that traps ocean vessels (especially fiberglass and Kevlar boats...
