CLARA | Buy DVDs Canada | Movie | Film Festival Winner | Foreign Films | Independent Films | Indie Films
Director Van Sowerwine animates in what look like plastic dolls, and with only fluttering eyelids and painted-on eyebrows providing any malleability in the face, the acting comes mainly through some very naturalistic full-body mime. The girl Clara (it turns out she's the living girl, not the corpse) shuffles to and fro in a depressed heap, heaves with a sorrow she can't express, and is clearly wracked by grief, the effect all the more impressive given the usually limited range of movement that the... |

Q&A: Red Digital Workflow in Progress on Indie Films
We took the feed out from the camera to the portable P2 [Mobile] deck and then we also had our sound guy send the output from his system to the P2 deck as well. Since the Red camera didnt record sound we had to figure out a way for me to review takes on set. So thats the quick solution we came up with. What we didnt realize at the time was that the P2 deck served as a backup for our sound, which became important because we had a couple of takes where there were problems in the original we recorded... |

VIVA LALDJERIE | Buy DVDs Canada | Movie | Film Festival Winner | Foreign Films | Independent Films | Indie Films
Just another soap opera in less deft hands, Nadir Mokneche's "Viva Laldjerie" jumps off the screen with humor, poignancy and local color. Contempo tale, of a headstrong 27-year-old and her ex-cabaret dancer mother forced to make their way in Algiers as creeping fundamentalism undermines even the arts, brims with telling incidents, touching details and human drama. A fine portrait of women exiled in their own country, pic has earned praise and euros since its April 7 release in Gaul. Fest exposure... |

WITNESSES | Buy DVDs Canada | Movie | Film Festival Winner | Foreign Films | Independent Films | Indie Films
Based on Jurica Pavicic's novel Alabaster Sheep, director Vinko Bresan opens the film with three Croatian soldiers planting a bomb at the home of a neighboring Serb, who was supposed to be out of town. Unfortunately, the man emerges from his home and the soldiers gun him down, taking the only witness hostage. Initially the director attempts to create suspense by keeping the "mystery" witness off screen and referring to "it" only, but that may be more a shortcoming of the English language and the... |

ANTARES | Buy DVDs Canada | Movie | Film Festival Winner | Foreign Films | Independent Films | Indie Films
Constructed as three interlocking stories featuring the residents of an Austrian apartment complex -- in which minor characters from one vignette turn up later as major characters in another and vice versa -- writer-director Gotz Spielmann's drama begins with a kind of muted bang, in more ways than one. After a short prologue that ends abruptly when a car slams into a taxicab carrying a man flipping through some dirty photos, "Antares" begins with the tale of Eva (Petra Morze), a married nurse who... |

All politics is local in this hilarious burlesque of a documentary following a tightly-run mayoral race in the small town of Bogota, New Jersey. Enter Democrat Fred Pesce, coaxed from retirement to share the ticket. With his health in question, and his politics compared to those of Tony Soprano, the field is wide open... |

FESTIVAL SHORTS COLLECTION | Buy DVDs Canada | Movie | Film Festival Winner | Foreign Films | Independent Films | Indie Films
A nice collection of shorts this month. The most notables are "No Bikini" and "The Dance Lesson". "The Dance Lesson" was picked because it has caused me to laugh out loud. Now, I can think up a few dance moves! "No Bikini" is an interesting and amusing short. Why cover up pre-puberty children if they didn't "feel naked" from the waist up? Good point, but our culture insist on "covering up". Unfortunately, there are a couple of shorts that didn't resonate with me. I consider "Diamond in a Bucket"... |

MORLANG | Buy DVDs Canada | Movie | Film Festival Winner | Foreign Films | Independent Films | Indie Films
Frosh Dutch helmer Tjebbo Penning has fashioned a sleek, highly stylized arthouse thriller that, fragmented in time and space, neatly resolves into a portrait of fictional painter Morlang, a middle-aged megalomaniac who feeds off his muses. This fun but facile hall of mirrors boasts all the effects of an Atom Egoyan film without the underlying emotion: austere 35mm compositions of carefully muted landscapes exist cheek-by-jowl with gallery-wall blowups of a roving DV camera, grainy nighttime surveillance... |

THE BOTHERSOME MAN | Buy DVDs Canada | Movie | Film Festival Winner | Foreign Films | Independent Films | Indie Films
"The Bothersome Man," a multiple award winner at international film festivals, is full of cool nightmare imagery, by a moviemaker with a lot of talent. If you're familiar with movie science-fiction dystopias (or anti-utopias), all the way from Fritz Lang's "Metropolis" to Jean-Luc Godard's "Alphaville" to George Lucas' "THX 1138" and Andrew Niccol's "Gattaca," much of it will strike overfamiliar chords. But this movie is made with formidable assurance, a compelling look, quiet skill and impressive... |
