Black Magic Hollyhock | Perennials from Gurney's Seed and Nursery

My first experience with a black hollyhock. It grew 6'plus, with beautiful elegant black flowers up and down each spike(about 14 total). It bloomed most of the summer. I planted it in front a piece of white lattice work. I planted in right smack dab in the middle of my vegetable garden. What a beautiful addition. It really stood out - my vegetables were great - I think they liked it too.

I love Hollyhocks and these grew and bloomed perfectly. I even had one precocious plant bloom the first year. My only complaint is that the Japanese Beetles love them, so they look pretty for about a week after blooming until the Beetles swarm in and eat them. I haven't tried any means of pest control, but will have to if I decide to grow these again. The beetles leave all of the other plants alone, then once they eat the hollyhocks they disappear. so I guess if you wanted to protect your other plants...

To transplant seedlings into the garden when all danger of frost has passed. Be sure the roots are covered well with soil and that the flowers are 1½ to 2 feet apart. Indian Springs Mix Hollyhock Flower Seeds
Indian Springs Mix Hollyhock Flower Seeds

Hollyhock seeds will easily self-sow, which also means they are fairly easy to germinate. If starting outdoors, plant them in late summer and plan to see sprouts the following spring. If starting indoors, you can start seedlings in the winter, using seed trays or pots with at least a 6-inch depth to accommodate the long tap root. You can, of course, sow them in smaller seed trays , transplanting them into deeper pots once you are assured of successful germination and growth. Transplant outdoors...

Holly Hocks
Holly Hocks

Hollyhocks are very drought resistant, and do well in full sun locations that might be too hot or dry for other plants. They produce large, flat coin-shaped seeds (1/2" diameter) that seem to grow easily wherever they drop. While an individual plant might only live a handful of years, by that time chances are good it will leave plenty of descendants. They have very long taproots which make transplanting difficult.
