An art form dating back to twelfth century Europe, marbling is accomplished by floating ink on a thickened surface of water, then combing the ink into a pattern. Though typically applied to paper, our Virginia artisans choose silk as their canvas, and create tie designs ranging from subtle to bold.

Swirls and eddies of rich color distinguish this silk tie. Made with a hand-printed marbling technique that dates back to 12 th century Europe. Since each print is made only once, you know you're wearing an original. Splendid silks can be found in the museum's textile collection.

Our Texas artisan brings fine Italian hand-marbling techniques to silk. In a painstaking process, she creates each tie, uno alla volta . After hand washing the silk, followed by soaking in mordant, she mixes water and a special seaweed powder in a large tray then floats and rakes the colorful dyes until she has a fabulous pattern. Next the fabric gently laid on top to absorb the colors, then washed and dried again. No two will be exactly alike. Dry clean.
