These mint error coins have an Improperly Annealed planchet. This happens when the coins stay for too long in the annealing furnace. In order to make the coins soft before they are struck and to protect the coin dies, coins are heated in an annealing furnace. If the coins stay too long in the furnace they overheat and change color. These Statehood quarters have a distinctive dark but fully lustrous color.
