In the 1500s Spanish traders brought the Valencia orange to the Caribbean island of Curaçao. Because of the hot dry climate, the Valencia oranges adapted and evolved into what is now called the laraha orange. It is a small, hardy orange that is too bitter to eat, but it makes a delicious orange liqueur. Having started in 1896, Senior Curaçao of Curaçao still owns groves of these laraha oranges which they use exclusively to make their liqueur, and they produce their Curaçao liqueur using old traditions...

This liqueur is a distillate of the dried peels of three types of oranges: curacao, a bitter orange from the Dutch Antilles, sweet oranges and mandarins. During the second distillation and other ingredients are added, including dried orange flowers and pennyroyal. The resultant spirit is then aged for 6 months in ash-wood white casks, filtered and sweetened. The finished product is clear, smooth and aromatically vibrant.
