Asparagus Yard Long" Pole Bean Seeds"
The unique bean/pea flavor of 'dow ghok' is a favorite in the orient. The Asparagus or 'Yard Long' beans are as 'good to eat as they are strange to behold'. Not really a true bean, they are grown just like a pole bean and have their own unique flavor which reminds some of asparagus. They are easy to grow, almost indestructible! When the plants are young, the leaves and stems can also be steamed and eaten. Yard Long beans are of sub-tropical origin and usually need a long warm growing period. However... |

Jersey Knight asparagus have extra large sprouts since no plant energy goes into seed production. Highly productive male plants are disease resistant, and adaptable. Asparagus verticillatus (Hardy Vining Asparagus Fern)
Imagine an asparagus that behaves like a twining vine to 15' tall, has glossy green foliage covered in fragrant white flowers in late spring, and is smothered with 1/2" bright red berries in late summer. Did I mention it's hardy to Zone 3? Would you believe it? Well, it's true, and we are pleased to be able to share one of the most bizarre plants we have encountered. The original seed came from the old DeGiorgio Seed Company via Harlan Hamernik, who also adores this plant in his Nebraska garden... |

Precoce D'Argenteuil Asparagus
This year I raised three varieties (Sweet Purple & Jersey All-Male) of asparagus from seeds. This one had the highest germination rate from a controlled mini-greenhouse, and at the end of the season, was the largest and healthiest of the three varieties. We just transferred about 75 plants of this to our community garden. I think I'll order more to sell at the Farmer's Market, and for replacing male plants next fall from the current lot.. |
