As another reviewer said, the fan is powered by a 4-pin Molex connector and not from the motherboard. This is required because if you set the three position switch to the lowest setting, the motherboard may not provide enough voltage for the fan to start (or even keep running). Motherboards often reduce the voltage supplied to the fan in order run the fan in quiet mode. The wiring is bit odd as the motherboard connector has only one wire in it but it worked fine for me.
