I'm pretty sure this is not defective, just a horribly dark and muffled compressor. No life at all, no sparkle to be found, and so much bass is added you can barely hear the compressor "working". Malekko should be ashamed of this one. I've owned some great compressors in my time too from Analogman, Boss, Maxon and Barge. This is the worst Ross clone out there! With the sensitivity knob at minimum, the level won't even reach unity gain. Avoid this at all costs!
