Alter Ego is the second label of 3rd Growth superstar Ch â teau Palmer. Planted to 47% Cabernet Sauvignon, 47% Merlot and 6% Petit Verdot, with an average vine age of 35 years, the estate is known for producing one of Bordeaux's most compelling wines in the aromatics as well as in the ability to put forth a rich, compelling, traditional wine. Alter Ego is typically made from the younger vines of the estate, and provides a stunningly good deal in great vintages. We tasted this out of barrel in Bordeaux...

- Cabernet Sauvignon has come a long way from its role as a blending varietal, however dominant, in the wines of Bordeaux. Today it is the most planted red varietal in the world. Identified as a descendent of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, the late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon needs to be planted in warmer climates to fully ripen. Its small berries can easily be identified for their distinctive blue color, thick skins and high tannins. And while the varietal has its own definitive characteristics...

This has a very attractive nose with ripe, bright black fruits laced with a little mocha and espresso. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine grainy tannins. Good acidity, a nice savoury aspect to the wine this year with nice build towards a dense finish with touches of roasted herbs. It does not have the length of a great Alter Ego, but it certainly has the delineation and the breeding. Very crisp on the dry masculine finish. Neal Martin, 89-90 points.

Drank 4/1/09; glass - medium garnet in glass, day bright, with moderate viscosity; nose - blackberries, black cherries, smoke (grilled meat), and spice (nutmeg,cinnamon); palate - black cherry, black berry, cassis, nice minerality (graphite?), relatively round but tannins that are present. This was opened in the morning, and consumed about 8 hours later. It was still fairly young in the glass, but opened up nicely over the next 2-3 hours. I suspect that this will require another 3-5 years to...

Medium plus blood red colored wine with a few distinct slightly colored legs. An immediately appealing nose of spearmint, cassis, smoke, sandalwood, cedar, and minerals. Already enjoyable now, the wine shows excellent balance to go along with its suave and persistent flavors. Tastes like a wine that hails from Chateau Palmer ? the highest praise for a second wine in my opinion.
