I confess, I loved these right out of the box. The 2011 model has a rubber shield in front of the shoe to prevent scuffing. I use these on my road bike. I upgraded from the very comfortable and durable Pearl Izumi x-Alps because I wanted a stiffer sole for longer rides. I confess, I only have about 100 miles on the shoe so far and I am still working on cleat position and breaking them in etc. These aren't replacements yet, they are for the more serious rides.
