2000 Angelus Bordeaux Blend
Since the mid eighties, this winery has been a consistent very high-level performer. I have always been pleased that I was lucky enough to purchase a case each of the 88, 89, and 90 on futures. The 2000 more than maintains this chateau?s reputation but I do not believe it is the equivalent of their efforts in 89, 90, and 95 and is only slightly better than the 1998. Very thick dark red black color with thick heavily pigmented legs. Strong aromas of pine, new oak, dark fruits, mint, and spice. Nice... |

1997 Angelus Bordeaux Blend
Wow. Cedar on the nose and blackberry and prune flavors on the palate. This wine has never been better. It has developed layers of complexity and a long long finish. This is one of the best 1997 Bordeax wines I have tasted and it continues to evolve. |

Chateau Angelus, red Bordeaux Saint Emilion
Chteau Angelus Saint-Emilion, Grand Cru Classe, Red Bordeaux, France. 98 Points, Parker. "This 7,000 case blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc will rival or perhaps eclipse vintages such as 2000, 1998, 1990, and 1989. Its dense purple color is followed by an extraordinary perfume of charcoal, espresso roast, blackberries, blueberries, and a hint of wood. In spite of its thick texture, terrific acidity, high tannins, and enormous intensity as well as richness, it is surprisingly approachable... |

1978 Margaux Bordeaux Blend
Although the 1978 is a more powerful, fuller-bodied style of Margaux, it is less charming and fruity than the 1979. The 1978's nose has moved from one of ripe fruit and spicy oak, to tarry, truffle, earthy aromas that come across as slightly too masculine and meaty. Nevertheless, this is a rich, full-bodied, concentrated Margaux that only suffers in comparison with the great vintages produced under the Mentzelopoulos regime. Some of its rusticity may be due to tannins that were not totally ripe during... |

2005 Bellevue (St Emilion) Bordeaux Blend
Bellevue has only been making terrific wine since 2000, which probably explains why they were not upgraded to a grand cru classe in St.-Emilion's most recent reclassification. This small (15.5 acres), south-facing hillside vineyard has such outstanding neighbors as Angelus and both Beausejours. Additionally, it boasted Nicolas Thienpont and Stephane Derenoncourt as managers, who represent uncompromising viticulture and winemaking at its best. The winemaking team is likely to change as the estate... |

2008 Chateau Angelus St Emilion - Bordeaux FUTURES
Made from yields of 30 hectoliters per hectare, this blend of 58% Merlot and 42% Cabernet Franc exhibits an inky/blue/purple color as well as a sweet bouquet of blueberries, blackberries, camphor, forest floor, and a hint of spring flowers. Although backward, it reveals great intensity, sweet tannin, a nuanced, lively personality, full body, and a promising style. Like a lot of these wines, the score for this wine is probably low given the late malolactic fermentation as well as a later than usual... |

2009 Chateau Angelus St Emilion - Bordeaux FUTURES
A candidate for one of the finest Angelus produced to date (and there have been many, including 1989, 1990, 2000 and 2005), this blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc was fashioned from tiny yields of 20 hectoliters per hectare. It boasts a black/purple color along with a gorgeous perfume of blueberry liqueur, spring flowers and graphite. In the mouth, notes of incense and cassis also emerge from this velvety-textured, full-bodied, intensely concentrated 2009. With silky tannins, low acidity... |

1978 Ausone Bordeaux Blend
Noticeably more garnet-colored than ruby, the 1978 Ausone remains a restrained, elegant, moderately concentrated, medium-weight example of this property's wines. The nose of dusty black-cherry fruit and damp earth needs to be coaxed from the glass. Softer, with slightly more fruit than the 1979, as well as a strong weedy, herbaceous element, the 1978 reveals plenty of tannin. The aggressive tannin again raises the question as to whether the concentration of fruit is sufficient. The 1978, a very good... |

1979 Leoville Las Cases Bordeaux Blend
This tasting consisted of each of the varietal components of Las Cases, followed by the final blend for Leoville-Las Cases. It is hard to believe, but the cuvee of Cabernet Sauvignon is so acidic, tough, hard, sinewy, and almost out of balance that it merits only an average rating, yet the final wine, which consists of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, is much better. It is a poignant example of how important blending can be, and how small percentages of other varietals can soften and alter a wine's personality... |
