The first Morgan Silver Dollar was released in 1878 and depicted eight tailfeathers on the reverse eagle design. Only 750,000 were struck because "eagle-eyed" citizens complained that real eagles have an odd, not even, number of tail feathers. Mint officials caved to the pressure and the design was modified to a seven tail-feather configuration. That makes these eight tail-feather 1878-P Morgans a rare breed.

The major design changes in the Morgan Dollar reverse designs include 8 TF, 7 TF over 8 TF, B1, Reverse of 1878 and Reverse of 1879. This book covers the modifications to the original 8 tail feather reverses which were made of necessity because the Philadelphia Mint experienced early working die failure and unintentional removal of parts of the eagle's design when the dies were polished.

The VAM-50 is one of four "funky feathers," called the crudest and most spectacular feathers of all the Morgan dies in the attribution guide, they have smooth surfaces and rough sides or smooth sides and rough surfaces: VAM-49, VAM-50, VAM-76 and VAM-81.
