Hesperis matronalis (Dame's Rocket) - Bulk Wildflower Seeds

After all danger of frost, sow in open ground well exposed. Cover with 1/8 inch soil. For earlier bloom, start indoors in flats about 6 to 8 weeks before last frost. Cover with 1/8 inch soil. When plants are a few inches high, thin or transplant before they become crowded.

This fragrant phlox-like flower is not a phlox but a member of the Mustard Family. I like to plant this with a cousin, Siberian Wallflower for a purple and gold show in spring. Very adaptable, blooms second year and then reseeds freely for flowers that will return for years. Allow to reseed itself or reseed annually. You'll want this showy fragrance in your garden. Other biennials to sow with this are Scarlet Gilia, Foxglove, and Sweet William dianthus.

Dame’s Rocket is often called “Wild Phlox” since the flowers are phlox-like in clusters on tall stems. However, these florets have only 4 petals (phlox have five), marking this species as a pink/purple member of the mustard family. Dame’s rocket is spectacular in early meadow bloom, and also carries a delightful clove-like scent. “Rocket” reflects the super-rapid growth in spring before bloom. The “Dame” in the name marks this flower as a favorite of women and mothers in medieval flower lore.

An upright, hardy perennial native to Europe, but has escaped cultivation and adapted throughout most of the United States. Delightful lilacpurple flowers are concentrated at the end of sturdy stalks. The genus name, Hesperis, is Greek, meaning "evening", referring to the plant's unique characteristic of filling the night with its ever so sweet fragrance. Prefers a moist, well drained soil in full sun or partial shade. Produces a high ratio of blooms per plant.
