I purschased the Monarch 10X56's as something more portable than the Fujinon 14x70's that I've had for nearly 20 years. The Nikon's are well made, feel wonderful in the hands, and bright with very sharp optics, especially during the day. At night the central zone is equally bright and crisp and color-free, however, the outer third of a very generous field of view is not nearly equal to the much more expensive Fujinon optics. These monarchs are wonderful, no doubt about it. I recently bought a pair of top-of-the-line Carl Zeiss Victory - Binoculars 8 x 42 T* FL binoculars (retail is about $2,000). Here are my thoughts on how these stack up: Overall, these monarchs stack up with the most well regarded pair of binoculars on the market (costing close to 10 times as much money) very well. The zeiss's are definitely better. A bit nicer in the hand, very subtly better optics in good light, noticeably better optics in poor light...

This is the new EDG II 10x42 binocular. It's one of the very few 10x42 binoculars that works well with glasses. It is a joy to look through.
