Low Angle Smoothing Plane

Used for final finishing work, this Plane has a perfectly flat sole that will smooth any wood surface. Features include rosewood handles and knobs, full plane iron adjustments, cast iron bases, frog and lever caps, chip breakers and knurled brass adjusting nuts. Ground serrated sole improves sliding action by reducing resistance. Beautifully made with precision fit and finish.

This plane was designed for taking away small amounts of material where tearout is possible or problems occur with changes in grain direction or height. It's also a great general purpose plane for other uses such as planing doors and window sashes. Body measures 9-3/4" long. Cast iron construction for years of dependable use.

Some folks however prefer O-1 Tool Steel blades. An O-1 blade will take a slightly finer edge when sharpened at 25 degrees or lower, making them useful for slicing or paring. In response to customer requests, O-1 blades are offered for the following tools: The Low Angle Adjustable Mouth Block Plane, Low Angle Jack Plane and Lie-Nielsen Bench Planes with a 2" or 2-3/8" iron.

Stanley produced three large-format low angle block planes. One of these, the Low Angle Smoothing Plane, was only made from 1926 to 1943*, which may account for the extraordinarily high prices that it commands on the antique market. Our Low Angle Smoother is based on the Stanley — it is essentially a shorter version of the Low Angle Jack. It has an adjustable mouth, and a unique overhead Bailey adjuster for depth of cut. The Smoothing Plane is the workhorse in the shop. Designed to smooth rough-sawn lumber, it is also the tool of choice for planing doors and windows as well as other planing chores around the shop. Hardwood handle and knob provide tremendous control. Smoothing Plane measures 9-3/4" long.

Our A-2 Steel blades will hold an edge extremely well, especially when sharpened at an angle of 30 degrees or higher. Some folks however prefer O-1 Tool Steel blades.
