Coconut Husk is one of the components of Hilltop Orchids' Potting Media mix. It is primarily used to retain a minimal amount of moisture around the roots while keeping the mix open and less compact. Coconut Husk is available in 1 Gallon or 2 Gallon bags.

Our coconut husk chips is an excellent alternative to fir bark because they retain water longer than most bark. They have a life expectancy of 3-5 years while bark last for only 1-2 years. They are 100% natural and can provide better drainage and earation essentials for all variety of orchids.

Measuring 1/2" to 3/4" in diameter when expanded, these coarse coconut-bark chips create pockets within the potting mix that help keep the medium loose, promoting drainage and aeration vital to the health of orchids and tropical plants. The coconut husk wets easily, has a high water-holding capacity, and releases water slowly.

We clean our chips by soaking them for 12-24 hours, draining them off and repeating the soak. We do this between 7 and 14 times. When we are satisfied they are free of salts and fine particulate matter, we dry them for mixing, packaging for resale or use in our own potting stations. You can be sure the coconut husk chips sold at OEI are thoroughly cleaned because we use the packaged mixes right off our own shelves.

These bales of fine coconut husk come directly to us, compressed and packaged for resale or for our own use. We clean our chips by soaking them for 12-24 hours, draining them off and repeating the soak. We do this between 7 and 14 times. When we are satisfied they are free of salts and fine particulate matter, we dry them for mixing, packaging or use in our potting stations. Even though these prepackaged bales are labeled as pre-washed, you should "clean" your chips, as we do, before use.
