In 1851, when photographs were first shown at the Great Exhibition of Arts and Industry, photography was primarily a hobby for well-to-do amateurs. These early photographers were members of the intellectual and aristocratic elite. They had the means, the education, and the leisure to pursue this new art-science with ardent seriousness. They formed societies, such as the Photographic Society and the Photographic Exchange Club, and published journals for the purpose of sharing their discoveries, exchanging photographs...

With saguaros balancing on either side of the frame, your composition is somewhat static and overly symmetrical. Shapes in a photographic composition, like plants in a garden, always look best in odd-numbered multiples: one, three, five, etc. Also, because the eye naturally goes to the brightest part of a photograph, the...

Golf Links to the Past Bobby Jones 1930 British Amateur Championship
Bobby Jones takes a moment to pose for the press before the start of the tournament. "The stars are with Bobby in this tournament," said a prophesying fan talking to O.B. Keller. Bobby Jones 1928 US Amateur Photograph Collection
In his first round match at Brae Burn, Jones handled J.W. Brown rather easily, 4 and 3. His second round opponent was Ray Gorton, the immensely popular Brae Burn member and the course record holder. In the semi-finals, he defeated Phillips Finlay, the long-hitting Harvard sophomore, by a score of 13 and 12. Jones advanced to the finals where he met T. Philip...
