Waltham Butternut Squash
100 days — This pre-1800 heirloom is becoming a very popular variety for decoration because of its unique and colorful fruit. It resembles a butternut but has a cream-colored ‘turban’ that is colorfully striped with green, yellow, orange, and red. The ten inch diameter fruit weigh about five pounds and are durable if not bruised. They are fair as a table squash. About 4 seeds per gram.

Waltham Butternut Squash
Sow in rows directly in the garden when weather is warm and there is no danger of frost. Make rows 6 - 8 feet apart and cover seed with pulverized soil at a depth of about 4 times the thickness of the seed. Plant 2 -3 seeds per foot and thin or transplant to 30 - 40 inches apart when established plants are approximately 4 inches tall. Let fruits fully mature and vines die back before harvest. Store in a cool, dry place. There are about 25 - 30 seeds in a packet, 100 - 150 per ounce.
