Not only was Shel Silverstein one of the funniest children’s book authors, he was also one of the most subversive. Through his irresistible rhymes, poems, and drawings, Silverstein made children feel like they were being spoken to as adults; and adults the chance to remember what it felt like to be a child.

I remember reading this book as a child and feeling bad for the tree. As an adult, I now know why. The central relationship in the book is one-sided. The self-centered boy in the book keeps taking from the tree, even when it means she (the tree) is left as nothing but a stump which he sits on as an old man. There is no transformation in the boy as he grows up; he continually returns to the tree in order to ask for something again. No matter how badly she's mutiliated, the tree still loves the boy...

Shel does a great job of writing books for children, I've read and love all of them, but this one takes the cake. It teaches the moral of giving, which all children should be taught, and its touching elements of love shine through wonderfully. I strongly recommend this book, and because it is a short read, its easy on us adults to read it nightly to our children.

I first read this book to my first granddaughter when she was about 3 years old. This book brought tears to my eyes as I was reading her this book. As she saw the tears rolling down my cheeks she said to me, "its ok grandma, they both grew old together and the tree really loved the little boy". My granddaughter is now about 10 and now a new set of grandchildren are about surface and my other children want a copy of the book. I'm buying this book to keep in my home with my other so very precious childrens...
