Synopsis: Halfway through the 1971 season, the Dallas Cowboys had every reason to be worried. A quarterback controversy brewed between Craig Morton and Roger Staubach. A contract dispute had brought star running back Duane Thomas to a vow of silence. Making matters worse was a 38-0 beating by the St. Louis Cardinals. It seemed certain that the team that "couldn't win the big one" would fall short of a title yet again.

And so they did. Dallas shined thanks in part to its "Triplets" on offense: quarterback Troy Aikman, receiver Michael Irvin, and the NFL's leading rusher, Emmitt Smith. The defense was just as impressive. Linebacker Ken Norton Jr. and pass rusher Charles Haley inspired a stingy unit to become a championship-caliber one by the playoffs. The Cowboys then peaked at the right time, beating the 49ers in an epic NFC Championship Game in San Francisco, and dominating the Buffalo Bills inSuper Bowl XXVII.

Despite being without Jimmy Johnson, who had led the Cowboys to two Lombardi Trophies, and being burdened with free agent losses, off-the-field distractions and injuries, Dallas was determined to capture its third title in four years. The Cowboys overcame these obstacles thanks largely to the stellar play of "the Triplets" -- Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith and Michael Irvin -- and the acquisition of a fourth superstar, All-Pro cornerback Deion Sanders.

Add to this mix the Orange Crush defense, and the Broncos believed they had the stuff for an unbeaten season. But it wasn't to be. The New York Giants upset the Broncos in Week 15. Still, Denver didn't allow the letdown affect them for very long. The Broncos may not have matched the '72 Dolphins, but they did wallop the '98 Dolphins and the Jets in the playoffs en route to Super Bowl XXXIII. There, John Elway won MVP honors in his final game, throwing for 336 yards as Denver won back-to-back world...

Quarterback Phil Simms was another matter. In eight years with the Giants, Simms had been maligned by the media and the fans for being good, but seldom great. Even a 14-2 regular season did not silence Simms' critics, or fully satisfy the demands of his head coach. Then, in Super Bowl XXI against Denver, Simms became the ultimate Parcells player, passing with a degree of precision unmatched in the big game's history.

Namath, who had a quick release and charisma to burn, piloted a Jets offense that set a franchise record by scoring 419 points that season. Still, his high-flying attack played into the perception that the AFL had finesse teams. But the Jets also led the league in defense, and possessed a punishing ground game that produced 22 touchdowns. This was a veteran group that bowed to no one - not even the powerful Baltimore Colts of the NFL.

In week 6 of the 1980 season, head coach Tom Flores gave Plunkett his chance. From there, he rewarded the team's confidence in him by leading Oakland to Super Bowl XV. There, backed by a renegade defense led by the incredible Lester Hayes, Plunkett won game MVP honors with two touchdown passes to Cliff Branch as Oakland beat the Philadelphia Eagles, 27-10.

Entering the 2005 season, many thought Bettis' prolific career was still incomplete.
