On January 11, 1784, the Spanish brig of war, El Cazador, set sail from Mexico to New Orleans (then Spanish territory) with a load of 450,000 pesos in Reales, a shipment needed to stabilize the Spanish colonies' economic system. Disaster struck and the El Cazador sank, along with the pesos and all Spanish hopes for North America.
