91 points, Josh Raynolds/Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, Jul/Aug 08 . Opaque, glass-staining purple. Pungent, strikingly floral nose combines blackberry, blueberry, Indian spices, violet and incense. Fleshy but light on its feet, with chewy dark berry flavors delivering solid flavor impact with minimal weight. Fresh, linear and pure, with excellent finishing lift and cut and strong dark berry qualities. Very graceful shiraz.

Gnarly Dudes is named for the gnarly old vines that stand around all lifetime long looking like they are soldiers ready to be led into battle. Year in and year out they throw a crop of beautiful fruit that is tamed and put into this bottle. Shiraz grapes, mature vines and the Barossa Valley, there is nothing quite like it.

The 2005 Shiraz “Ares” is a glass-coating opaque purple. The nose delivers tar, scorched earth, saddle leather, blueberry, and a hint of chocolate. Opulent, layered, and intensely flavored, it has excellent integration of oak, tannin, and acidity and enough hidden structure to evolve for up to a decade. Drink this tasty Shiraz through 2025. --Jay Miller of Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

"(RP 92) A luscious red revealing abundant amounts of cherries, raspberries and currants intermixed with notions of licorice and spice, it is about as seductive as a Syrah/Grenache blend can be. Since only 20% new oak was used, the fruit is its dominant characteristic. (RP Jr)"

Ares is the very best Shiraz we make here at Two Hands Wines, and since Shiraz is what we do, this wine is where it's at! Made from superb fruit and representative of our fines barrels, it is a statuesque, powerful and deeply flavoured wine. Amazing depth almost impenetrable purple black in colour. The nose is still very tight and requires plenty of air. After a while it starts to reveal layers of broody black fruit - blood plum and blackberry laced with tar, coffee and dark roasted spices. The palate...

"Bright purple. Explosively perfumed bouquet of raspberry, blueberry, spicecake, potpourri and anise, with a subtle mocha undertone. More serious on the palate, where chewy cherry-cola and licorice qualities are complicated by notes of violet pastille and black cardamom. Large-scaled, fat and spicy, with strong finishing grip and supple tannins." 93 points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, Jul/Aug 09

There are three icon wines in the portfolio. The opaque purple-colored 2006 Ares is a 100% Shiraz cuvee sourced from Barossa (77%) and McLaren Vale (23%) which received some 200% new oak treatment. Following a barrel selection of the winerys best Shiraz (not all of which was in new oak), the wine spent its last 12 months of elevage in 100% new French barriques. It offers up a room-filling perfume of toasty oak, pencil lead, vanilla, pepper, sage, plum, and blueberry pie. Opulent and layered...

- While it is true that the greatest strides in Australian winemaking have come in the last 30 years or so, commercial viticulture began as early as the 1820s and has developed uninterrupted ever since. The majority of the great Region are in the southeastern area of the continent, with the Barossa Valley, Claire Valley, McLaren Vale, and Coonawarra in South Australia, the Yarra Yarra Velley and Pyrenees in Victoria and the Upper and Lower Hunter Valleys in New South Wales. Many of the wines from...
