Calaveras County was an important destination during the Gold Rush, and those miners needed something to drink. This lead to some of the state’s first vineyards. The gold ran out, but the wines have lived on. It’s a warm area, lending itself to full-bodied reds like this Syrah. Round, rich and smooth, it’s got plenty of dark berry notes leavened by a touch of chocolate.

Here is another great Syrah!! Again with a warm vintage we gained great color and dramatic structure. The aromas of our 2004 are intense and very ripe with a background note of spicy toasted French oak. Scents of plums, blackberries and violets are dominant. The flavors are dark and rich on the palate following through with the dark fruit theme. The wine is soft in its tannins but balanced with good acidity.

Aromas of your rich uncle’s old cedar cigar box blend smoothly into plum and blueberry explosions. When the fruit bombing stops you are left with a creamy smooth sensation of vanilla and cream. It’s like Grandma’s egg nog, Christmas Eve: nutmeg, cloves, allspice. There are some pert and supple tannins you’ll definitely want to hang with and let soften in the glass. A wine that leaves you smiling seductively, on the inside...

Bradgate Syrah 2004
Dark mulberry color. A complex flavor spectrum of v iolets, sweet ripe plums and wild scrub with nuances of crushed pepper and bay leaf. Maturation in oak adds a spicy oak smokiness, with a fruitcake finish.

"Battelys Rhone-like 2004 Syrah includes 5% Viognier in the blend, and spent 18 months in French oak, 25% of which was new. Its Cote Rotie-like aromas consist of spring flowers interwoven with black raspberries, cassis, and a hint of bacon fat. Full-bodied and rich with good underlying acidity, beautiful purity, and tremendous symmetry as well as balance, it is a stunning Syrah that should be even better in 3-4 years, and keep for 12-15. Kudos to owner/winemaker Russell Bourne."

Turnbull Syrah 2004
Description: The Turnbull name goes back to the early 1300’s when a court member of Robert the Bruce saved the king’s life by turning a ferocious bull, which had threatened to gore the king. The grateful king dubbed his subject “Turnbull” and awarded him a crest featuring a bull’s head twisted back with the motto: Audaci Favet Fortuna, or “Fortune Favors the Bold”.

Turnbull Estate Oakville Syrah 2004
Intensely flavored berries with a blacker aromatic character than the traditional ripe red fruit personality of the same varietal grown in Oakville. My tasting notes include terms like black tea, coffee, soy, steak sauce and tar; these in handsome combination with concentrated sweet red berries, orange marmalade, cotton candy and vanilla. (Yes, believe methis can all be insanely wonderful together! Who knew?!) Sleek on entry, this is a big mouthful of wine all wrapped up in nicely tailored French...

Maryhill's fourth vintage of Syrah holds a wonderful blend of black cherry, cane berry and ripe plum flavors. Eighteen months of American and French oak aging has given this wine's complex earthy flavors. Try this wine with all hearty dishes including saucy pastas, pepper steaks or pork chops.

Covey Run Columbia Valley Syrah 2004
This vintage is dark, soft and spicy with a deep red-purple hue. The nose, reminiscent of a Cote-Rotie, is full of dark berry fruits with smoky oak and chocolate undertones. Rich flavors of rich plum and cherry flavors are complemented by soft tannins and a lingering finish. Syrah is a hearty red wine that pairs well with grilled and roasted red meats. Due to its soft tannins, it can also beenjoyed with spicy Mexican and Asian dishes.

The grapes for the Syrah were picked at optimum maturity and rotary fermented to achieve the best extraction possible. Rotary fermentation allows Burgess to maintain a proper tannin level, while also keeping a wine with a full, rich body. The wine was aged in 1/3 French oak and 2/3 American oak. The oak levels were adjusted to allow the classic blackberry fruit flavors in the wine to come forward. This wine is wonderful with any cheese, light hors doeuvres and grilled meat and vegetable dishes.

One of Australias most prodigious Syrahs, Clarendon Hills 2004 Syrah Astralis is fashioned from vines planted in 1920, and spends time in 100% new French oak from the cooper, Cadus. It boasts off the charts intensity as well as an opaque purple color, and notes of spring flowers, blueberries, blackberries, roasted coffee beans, pepper, smoke, and a hint of sweet toasty oak. This full-bodied, rich, intense, backward Syrah needs 2-3+ hours in the decanter if one is going to approach it at this point...
