Broad eaves and a tapered foot make this an elegant lantern. Smooth cedar (sugi) shapes the roof and sides. A mon, or family crest adorns the door. The paper lining needs to be replaced (or not). There's wear on the wood (mice gnaws) and the upper rear ranma panel looks like part has broken away. This doesn't detract from the symmetry and balance of the piece. It would be very simple to wire this lantern if one chose to use it as an electric lamp or porch-light.

This lantern was made with fine details. The roof was a great web pattern and the filegree sides flare towards the four feet. The door is rusted solidly in position, but in spite of the rust this is a heavy and solid piece, dating from the Meiji period.

I bought this because I was sick of replacing cheap wands every year. Now, this lasted about 9 months. The metal parts started to corrode and the regulating valve blew out because the threading was corroded. Very disappointing! If you are looking for quality, don't waist your time here. To be fair, I guess a high quality wand would probably have to be build completely out of stainless steel and have to cost a hundred bucks or more, but the [...] bucks for this one was wasted for a product that is...
