Uprooted to the small Midwest town of Henryville for the remainder of the school year, Melissa finds this new place very different, yet similar in some ways to her life in New York. Social activities, attention from the football captain, a challenging school orchestra, participation in drama class, and friendship with a Jewish boy ease her transition. Melissa surprisingly blossoms and becomes anxious to explore her Jewish heritage when faced with anti-Semitism that rears its ugly head. Melissa's...

Album review: Vanessa-Mae was just a teenager when her major-label debut, The Violin Player , was released. This may account for her ability to successfully fuse old-world classical styles with a contemporary new age sensibility. She comes out scorching on the Bach classic "Toccata and Fugue in D Minor," showing off her world-class talent as a revolutionary violinist. The new arrangements by producer Mike Batt add a flavorful world music appeal that both compliments and showcases her masterful skill...

Solos for the Violin Player [advanced] (Gingold)
The third volume of the Heifetz Collection is a treasure trove of material for violinists, including many items that have never been published before. Jascha Heifetz (1901-1987) remains a landmark among violinists of the twentieth century, a performer who virtually redefined the limits of the possible for his chosen instrument. These transcriptions and arrangements, made to enrich his own repertoire, will be a great boon to young virtuosos looking for a challenge. Many of them were provided by the...

This intricate clay mariachi figurine was made with metal wires for the arms and neck, then painted with bright acrylic paints. It was handmade by artist Jose Mendez in his southern Mexico home, and is an excellent example of traditional Mexican folk art. His artwork is inspired by Mexico's annual Day of the Dead celebrations, which take place from October 31 through November 2. They also make great Halloween decorations!

The Violin Players
