It was also said of Beaumarchais (1732-99) that he had only one character - himself - and that Figaro epitomizes all his creator's vices. This does not seem to have stood in the way of his success. If The Barber of Seville and its sequel, The Marriage of Figaro, are known to us almost exclusively through the operas of Rossini and Mozart, then that is our loss, for Beaumarchais's effortless light touch makes these two plays high points in eighteenth-century European comedy.

Suite to the Barber of Seville [advanced] (Sedlak)
21st Century (2007). This setting of the traditional gospel tune Deep River is for large woodwind choir, double bass and drum set and features the alto sax as a solo instrument. The introduction is a slow, melodic and harmonious reading of the tune. This in turn leads to the body of the work which is spirited and full of life. --the publisher

Review: Challenging, fun, a learning experience, a hefty concert piece and busy ringers are all words and phrases that describe this new transcription from Martha Lynn Thompson. Rossini's famous overture flies off the page with an allegro vivo tempo, melody in octaves, a variety of special techniques, chromatic movement, catchy rhythms and contrasting dynamics. The 201 measures goes by rather fast!
