The BBC Sessions
Fourteen gorgeous tracks recorded for the BBC between 1996 and 2001. At the time, the group rarely performed live, so all these songs are noticeably different from the studio versions. The regular CD includes an additional four unreleased songs from their classic early Jeepster period. The limited, deluxe double CD contains an entire live show broadcast on BBC Evening Session in mid-2001 with another four never before heard songs. Eight-page booklet in the regular CD (six-page booklet in the deluxe version)...

Formed at an all-night café in Glasgow, Scotland in early 1996, and named after a cult 60s television show, Belle And Sebastian appeared to have taken a few hints from cult US band the Residents as far as publicity went. The founding members of the band, songwriter Stuart Murdoch (b. 25 August 1968, Glasgow, Scotland; vocals/guitar/piano) and Stuart David (bass), refused to release photographs or any information about individual members beyond their names. Despite this self-effacement (or gimmick...

The BBC Sessions (Greatest Hits, Live)
Description A fine compilation of 1965-73 BBC performances, the majority of the tracks hailing from 1965-67, although some are drawn from 1970 and 1973. As one of the best live bands ever, the Who as expected come through pretty well in the live-in-the-studio environment, although the arrangements usually stick close to the records. Most of the songs were done by the group for studio releases as well, but there are a few covers that they never put on their albums or singles at the time, making this...

It's fair to say that the Orb never would have reached the British pop Top 40 without the influence and promotion of John Peel, who sponsored three sessions between 1989 and 1995. (There have also been two additional dates for other presenters.) Peel, a veteran of the late-'60s British music scene, appreciated the Orb's blend of futurism and folky traditionalism, seeing them not just as dance saviors but another dot in the line that connected pixilated popsters like T. Rex and the Incredible String...

"Substitute," produced by Kit Lambert, marked the band's acrimonious split with Talmy, with whom the band and their managers were no longer happy working, and the end of the group's British DeccaâBrunswick recording contract -- Lambert and Stamp also tried to scrap the American Decca deal, but that proved impossible. Starting with "Substitute," the band was now signed to Polydor in England, and issued on Reaction. There were, for a time, rival releases on Brunswick and Reaction as Talmy and Brunswick...

On Air -- The BBC Sessions will ultimately be of interest only to hardcore Shamen fans, and even they may find the colledction somewhat disappointing. There's not much difference between the studio versions and these live cuts, which may be frustrating to completists -- after all, live versions should offer revelations. There are no revelations here, only competent live cuts that sound exactly like they were recorded in the studio. That may be enough for some hardcore fans, but it may also frustrate...

The Complete Bbc Sessions
17 years of return trips to the BBC studios yielded a whole lot of really special moments for Difford, Tilbrook and company. These make a wonderful companion to the studio albums: 'Is That Love?; Up the Junction; Take Me I'm Yours; Pulling Mussels (from the Shell); Tempted; I Must Go; Cat on a Wall; All Fed Up; Ain't It Sad; Hourglass', and more from 1977–94 including acoustic versions and priceless off-the-cuff playfulness from the band!

The Wedding Present - BBC Sessions - Cassette tape on Dutch East India Records
Emerging in the wake of the Smiths' demise as the U.K.'s most successful indie pop band during the late '80s, the Wedding Present were founded in Leeds, England, in 1985. Formed from the ashes of the short-lived Lost Pandas, the Weddoes (as they were affectionately dubbed by fans) were essentially the vehicle of singer/songwriter David Gedge, the only constant member throughout the group's tumultuous history. Initially rounded out by guitarist Peter Solowka, bassist Keith Gregory, and drummer Shaun...
