With over 20 records under his own name and countless more as a collaborator, band member, or guest, guitarist Terje Rypdal has written and performed virtually in all styles of music that emanate from classical or jazz. As an improviser he is a brilliant thinker and spontaneous composer. As a proper composer he has written everything from pop singles to symphonies. Skywards is a return to jazz proper for Rypdal . He surrounds himself with familiar faces for this date, including cellist David Darling...

Rypdal, Terje - Terje Rypdal
Recorded in 1971, this is Terje Rypdal's first album for ECM and its still fresh sounding. It was a transitional period for him as he still approaches this session as a rock player. He uses tons of distortion and effects, sounding quite different than he did later on. There is a stellar cast of musicians including Jan Garabarek, Bob Stenson, Arild Andersen, Jon Christensen among others. Serious blowing through out. Long tracks filled with dynamic twists in turns from controlled, near psychedelic...

"A live recording from the Leipzig Opera House is the debut documentation of the duo of Ketil Bjørnstad and Terje Rypdal (working together since 1999). Material revisits pieces from Bjørnstad’s “Water Stories” and “The Sea” and from Rypdal’s “If Mountains Could Sing” and “Skywards”, and adds a Grieg theme and new material. Cranked-amp electric guitar and acoustic piano is a rare, possibly unique, duo combination, but as Ketil notes in his tour diary liner notes, 'I am not always the softest pianist...

The set begins with the dark, low-register rumble on the piano (the Bösendorfer has extra keys at the bottom) of "The Sea V." It is an ominous, dissonant way to begin a show -- to begin any recording, really. Rypdal allows his pedaled Fender guitar and twin Vox AC30 amps to offer some controlled feedback, a few razor-sharp notes, and then, as Bjørnstad begins to articulate the melody, the guitarist lightens also, still hovering in the background, offering texture and atmosphere as the theme of melody...

Bugge Wesseltoft are familiar collaborators, but there are new players here, too, such as son Marius on turntables, electronics, and samples, bassist Bj°rn Kjellemyr , organist and electric pianist Stsle Storl°kken , and drummer Paolo Vinaccia . Together they create a sublime textural palette for Rypdal 's compositions such as the beautiful medley, "Waltz for Broken Hearts" (that references ever so briefly "I Only have Eyes for You" ), and "Makes You Wonder." Silence, space, and lyricism haunt the...
