Taylor Fladgate vintage port is marked by a style which seamlessly marries power and longevity with grace and finesse. Its dense, concentrated black fruit and tannic backbone evolve over time into integrated flavors of dark berry and plum offset by complex notes of leaf, rose petal and chocolate and a long, refined finish

Taylor Fladgate Vintage Port 2003, 1.5L, WA 98 Pts 1500ml
"The 2003 Taylor Fladgate Vintage Port improved each time I raised it to my nose or mouth. It displays a black color and a salty, graphite-laced nose packed with sweet black fruits that is reminiscent of a stellar vintage of Chateau Latour. With air, notes of molasses, burnt sugar, spices, and jammy plums emanate from the glass. Full-bodied, hugely dense, immensely rich, as well as thick, this behemoth is also amazingly balanced and harmonious. Raisins, molasses, licorice, black cherries, plums,...

This house must certainly be the Latour of Portugal. Their ports are remarkably backward yet still impressive when young. Of all the vintage ports, those of Taylor need the longest time to mature and even when fully mature seem to have an inner strength and firmness that keep them going for decades. Their tawnys are also among the very best, though somewhat expensive. The 1983 is wonderfully aromatic and so perfumed (a characteristic of this charming vintage), yet powerful, long and deep on the palate...

Among the most saturated blue/purple/black-colored examples of the vintage, Taylor's 2000 tastes like a young vintage of Chateau Latour on steroids. Aromas of graphite, blackberry liqueur, creme de cassis and smoke jump from the glass. Spectacularly concentrated and enormously endowed, with sweetness allied to ripe tannin, decent acidity, and layer upon layer of fruit and extract, this is the leading candidate for the port of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2040.

"Extremely understated and closed, it starts out slowly but finishes quickly. Deep ruby-purple, with berry and cherry aromas and flavors, full-bodied, very tannic and hard. Great future." –JS

There is an explosion of fruit and tannins in the mouth but at the same time this wine is in total harmony. Deep dark ruby, with blackberries and violets on the nose, full-bodied, with masses of blackberry flavors, full, hard tannins and a very long finish. Will age for decades. (JS)

Rated 96-Of all the vintage ports, those of Taylor need the longest time to mature and even when fully mature seem to have an inner strength and firmness that keep them going for decades. Their tawnys are also among the very best, though somewhat expensive. The 1977 has consistently been at the top of my list of vintage ports in this great vintage, although the Dow, Graham, and Fonseca are equally splendid. It is a mammoth, opaque, statuesque vintage port of remarkable depth and power, but is should...

92 points Robert Parker: "A deep black/opaque hue. A very pure, well-defined nose of black cherries, cassis and plum with a certain 'coolness' about it. The palate is full-bodied...but very pure again, with notes of plum, liquorice, a hint of black pepper and quite a fleshy, supple finish. Very fine. Drinking 2015-2030."

Saturated black/purple-colored, with stunning aromatics of blueberries, blackberries, licorice, and iron, this spectacular vintage port is one of the stars of the vintage. Extremely full-bodied, with silky tannin, spectacular concentration and purity, multiple flavor levels, and an evolved, forward personality, this is an exquisite yet precocious 1997 vintage port. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2030. 96 Points Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, January 2000.

Parker Review: "This classically made, opaque purple-colored wine is crammed with black fruits (blueberries and cassis). It reveals high tannin and a reserved style, but it is enormously constituted with massive body, a formidable mid-palate, and exceptional length. It is a young, rich, powerful Taylor that will require 10-15 years of aging. Compared to the more flashy, forward style of the 1992, the 1994 has more in common with such vintages as 1977 and 1970. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2045."

Produced by the traditional foot-treading method in the lagares of Quinta de Vargellas, Taylor, Fladgate Vintage Ports are bottled, unfined and unfiltered, after two years in cask. They are customarily released immediately thereafter as futures, and the patient consumer will wait at least two decades before his bottles approach maturity. By this time, the wine will have thrown a heavy "crust," or deposit, and must be decanted prior to serving. An open bottle of mature vintage port should ideally...

Quinta de Vargellas vintage ports are one of a small handful of single estate ports to have achieved the stature and reputation of the great 'declared' vintages and to be traded regularly at auction. Still as prized today as they were over 180 years ago, these distinctive wines are one of the longest established of all single estate ports.
