Description Musician and filmmaker Phill Niblock turns his lens on the legendary avant-garde jazz artist Sun Ra in this experimental short subject. Shot using a high-contrast negative film process and composed in a series of extreme close-ups of the hands and mouths of Sun Ra and his Solar Arkestra, Sun Ra: The Magic Sun is an impressionistic look at these influential jazz artists, with the images providing a counterpoint to the unique energy of Ra's music. Sun Ra: Live At The Roadhouse
The Arkestra is smokin hot! Sun Ras gifts as arranger, band leader and soloist are never more apparent. Just when you think the band couldnt possibly get any hotter, it all floats down to several Ra piano solos, then either piano/trumpet or piano/sax duets, then back to the entire band - even hotter each time round - giving way to several Sun Ra vocals, including This World Is Not My Home and even Lets Go Fly A Kite. June Tyson plays violin, and the second set ends with a great African lounge piece...

NTSC/Region 0. In this volume, the Arkestra prove that they are the true heirs to the Duke Ellington Orchestra, yet with the futuristic edge that is only Sun Ra. Here they have perhaps their most traditional big band sound, with long ever-changing instrumental pieces that have the Arkestra's ultra-unique combined African and Egyptian vibe. Lots of percussion, beautiful vocals by June Tyson, amazing solos by both John Gilmore and Marshall Allen as well as other band members. 117 minutes.

Jazz CD - not play-along/karaoke. Sun Ra has always been an explorer, venturing out among the cycles and frequencies of the musical cosmos like a wild astronaut, bent on rejoicing and celebrating the wonders of the universe. The extended metaphor of space travel permeates the emotional climate of this masterful recording, as Sun Ras Arkestra reaches out to express the vibrations of the stars as in Interstellar the adventure of travel as in Moonship and Unknown Planet. Sun Ra has always been...

Composer, photographer and filmmaker Phill Niblock's classic of experimental underground filmmaking with a sensational soundtrack by pianist Sun Ra and the members of his Solar Arkestra! Shot in the mid '60s, when the Arkestra was based in New York, this film was produced using a unique negative process and ultra-tight close-ups on the moving hands and mouths of the musicians. The result is a virtually abstract music film, mastered from a new print in all its incredibly sharp black & white glory.

Claiming that he was of the "Angel Race" and from Saturn, Sun Ra believed in a "cosmic" philosophy that made him both a pioneer of afro-futurism as well as one of more controversial figures in contemporary jazz.

The latest version of this, the 3rd and final 60's issue of Sun Ra on ESP in the 60's actually does add something new; 3 tracks/almost 25' of never heard bonus material from the same May, 1966 college tour that produced the rest of the album. Also includes new liner notes.

While one can't quite call it the Sun Ra dance album, this 1978 recording, made for a tiny Philadelphia record label, finds the Sun Ra Arkestra 's rhythm section settling into a steady groove on each of the lengthy tracks, while horns, reeds, guitars, and Sun Ra 's keyboards solo in overlapping patterns on top. The title number recalls Charles Mingus ' "Goodbye Porkpie Hat" in its slow pace and elegiac tone, while the middle three tracks have livelier beats with playing that often answers to the...

Notes: Personnel: Sun Ra (piano); James Scales (alto saxophone); John Gilmore (tenor saxophone); Art Hoyle, Dave Young (trumpet); Julian Priester (trombone); Richard Evans, Wilburn Green (bass); Robert Barry (drums); Jim Herndon (tympani). The late pianist/bandleader/composer Sun Ra was one of the earliest musicians to embrace the jazz avant-garde, and some credit him as being a point of origin for it. Be that it may, SUN SONG is one of the Ra's earliest and most accessible albums. Recorded in the...
