Paul Baumer enlisted with his classmates in the German army of World War I. Youthful, enthusiastic, they become soldiers. But despite what they have learned, they break into pieces under the first bombardment in the trenches. And as horrible war plods on year after year, Paul holds fast to a single vow: to fight against the principles of hate that meaninglessly pits young men of the same generation but different uniforms against each other--if only he can come out of the war alive.

All Quiet on the Western Front
"All Quiet on the Western Front" is probably the most famous anti-war novel ever written. The story is told by a young 'unknown soldier' in the trenches of Flanders during the First World War. Through his eyes we see all the realities of war; under fire, on patrol, waiting in the trenches, at home on leave, and in hospitals and dressing stations. Although there are vividly described incidents which remain in mind, there is no sense of adventure here, only the feeling of youth betrayed and a deceptively simple...

All Quiet on the Western Front, Book Notes Series, Erich Maria Remarque
June 11, 2009: The book's plot moves pretty slowly in order to develop the characters as much as possible, but I understand why this book is called the best war novel of all times. War scenes are accurately represented and the plot holds the thrill and edge-of-the-seat kind of feeling that can only be felt in a real battle. I especially liked the ending and the message it gave. Look for Remarque's anti-war comments as you read.

This war novel is actually an anti-war novel, tracing the lives and losses of a young group of soldiers caught in the brutality of World War I. Gripping, realistic, and searing with a vision inconsistent with post-war German character, this book caused Remarque to receive death threats and to leave Germany to live and work in Hollywood. This concise supplement to Remarque's All Quiet on the Western Front helps students understand the overall structure of the novel, actions and motivations of the characters...

Both of these classic novels were written during the Weimar period in Germany, 19191933. All Quiet on the Western Front is the story of Paul Baumer, a young soldier who enlisted in the German army with youthful enthusiasm just before World War I, only to find himself destroyed by the brutality of trench warfare. His poignant tale is not a treatise on the inhumane nature of combat, but rather the story of one ordinary young mans life-changing experience. As Remarque opens his novel: This book is to...
