Owner Warning! Because Turquoise is a hydrous (i.e., has water trapped in the crystal structure), Turquoise should be protected from sunlight and heat. Even with the best of care, Turquoise may sometimes lose the blue color. As it dries out, it tends to turn green. We recommend purchasing Stabilized Turquoise, or Turquoise that has been treated with a fine resin to seal and protect this beautiful, but rather porous stone.

Beautiful turquoise is a phosphate mineral popular all over the world. Mined since 5000 BC, it is one of the first gemstones known to be used by humans. Color variation from sky-blue to medium green is affected by differing amounts of copper and iron, more copper giving the stone a bluer color and more iron a greener one. Beautiful light blue turquoise is mined in Northern Iran and other varieties occur in Mexico, the United States and elsewhere.

The famous Navajo silverwork began in these hard years of reconstruction. It was a move made on the Indians' own initiative and, at first, without help from school or agent. For fifty years or so the Navajos had been wearing silver jewelry and bridle ornaments stolen or traded in Mexico. Why should they bother to make such things themselves? They were too busy with war and sheep raising. However, one medicine man called Etsidi Sani, or Old Smith, had at least been interested ...
