Hemingway's direct and deceptively simple style shapes these stories into true masterpieces. From "Up in Michigan", written in 1921, to "Old Man at the Bridge", penned in Barcelona in 1938, these narratives trace, through setting and theme, the author's life, his evolving literary style, and the development of the "Hemingway hero"--be he soldier, boxer, expatriate, or bullfighter.

These dual collections offer a very broad selection of the Nobel laureate's short works. Gleaned from several volumes, the stories run the gamut of Hemingway's career, from uneven fledgling attempts such as "Up in Michigan" to masterpieces like "The Snows of Kilimanjaro," written at the height of his powers, with an amalgam of his often overlooked Nick Adams stories ("The End of Something," "The Three Day Blow"), hardboiled bits ("Fifty Grand"), and favorites ("Hills Like White Elephants,...

The Complete Short Stories of Ernest Hemingway, Ernest Hemingway
The subtitle of this monumental collection refers to the home (Lookout Farm) that Hemingway owned in Cuba from 1939 to 1959. That time frame accounts for most of the short fiction, published and unpublished, that followed the major collection issued in 1938, The First Forty-Nine. There are 60 stories in all. Of the 21 not included in the 1938 collection, the seven heretofore unpublished pieces will interest readers most. Three are especially good. ``A Train Trip'' and ``The Porter'' are self-contained...

About the Author: Ernest Hemingway ranks as the most famous of twentieth-century American writers; like Mark Twain, Hemingway is one of those rare authors most people know about, whether they have read him or not. The difference is that Twain, with his white suit, ubiquitous cigar, and easy wit, survives in the public imagination as a basically, lovable figure, while the deeply imprinted image of Hemingway as rugged and macho has been much less universally admired, for all his fame. Hemingway has...

Hemingway played football in high school and was a lifelong sportsman, obsessed from his youth with hunting and fishing, but had no formal education after Oak Park High. He drove an ambulance in France in World War I and also served (and was wounded) in the Italian army. After the war, he was a reporter for the "Toronto Star". In the 1920s, he settled in Paris as part of the group of American expatriates who formed Gertrude Stein's circle. She was an enormous influence on his writing, teaching the...

April 16, 2005: I had never read anything by Hemingway until a friend loaned me this collection of ten short stories. Although I can't comment on Hemingway's entire body of work, in these stories he seems to find disappointment in his major characters. His characters are all interesting, flawed human beings, with the exception of the women, whom he seems to revere and loathe at the same time. The men are all consumed with manly pursuits like gambling, hunting, boxing and warfare. ...
