The title of this British-made black comedy gives everything away: Shaun is a cheeky send-up of zombie movies in general and George Romero's Dawn of the Dead in particular. Whereas the Romero film largely took place in a shopping mall, Shaun centers around the working-class pub where the eponymous protagonist (played with self-deprecating charm by Simon Pegg ) and his best friend, Ed ( Nick Frost ), spend virtually all their spare time -- much to the chagrin of Shaun's girlfriend, Liz ( Kate Ashfield...

Shaun of the Dead is an uproarious romantic zombie comedy that amazingly lives up to each of those genres in a fully respectable and entertaining way. With a return to the type of George Romero zombie logic that many genre throwbacks around this time threw out the window in favor of super sped-up monster attacks (see Dawn of the Dead remake or the laughably bad House of the Dead for reference), Shaun embraces the lumbering menace these type of undead creatures originally possessed, though the filmmakers...

Edgar Wright's horror-comedy film, SHAUN OF THE DEAD, follows the title character (Simon Pegg) through his mundane life in London. Joined by his immature and ever-present roommate, Ed (Nick Frost), Shaun excels at nothing except drinking pints of ale and watching television, which causes friction with his girlfriend, Liz (Kate Ashfield). Before Shaun can save his relationship, however, he's got to fend off a horde of zombies that are slowly taking over the city. Armed with a cricket bat and a vague...

This is a nice little soundtrack for anyone into gothic stuff like Nick Cave, TSOL, or the Cramps. I got it only to hear the Damned selection, 'Dead Beat Dance'. Although it's not their best work, its a nice addition to any completist freaks who enjoy the Damned. The songs' sound is comparable to the B-sides they did during thier Anything period (Temptation, Beat Girl, etc.).

Cowritten by Wright and Pegg, SHAUN OF THE DEAD succeeds remarkably well at combining droll British humor with good, old-fashioned zombie cinema. While the movie is often hilariously amusing, it takes its horror pedigree seriously, offering up moments of genuine suspense, and even a healthy dose of gore. Pegg is oddly charming as the put-upon lead slacker, and Frost is appropriately oafish, but the living dead themselves also take up a fair amount of screen time, shuffling and limping in their best...
