The chair's introduction to America seems to have been by the 1726 governor of Pennsylvania, Patrick Gordon. Although they originated in England, American craftsmen developed a wide variety of types that left the English models far behind. This is the chair I sit in everyday at my dining table at home. It is really comfortable! As with all my chairs this one is very ruggedly constructed. The legs extend through the seat and are firmly glued and wedged. The ash spindles also extend through the seat and arms and are glued and wedged as well as tensioned against each other to provide a deceptively strong and beautiful armchair.

The Shakers were known for their inventiveness, outstanding craftsmanship, industriousness, and spirituality. The Shakers sought to live separately from the "world’s people", and sought to produce all the goods needed for their own purposes and to...

New England origins, probably CT or CT valley Massachusetts for this arm chair. Early American c1780 birdcage armchair in original paint. Color is black with patina and mottled crusting, for some reason 2 spindles under a arm show yellow paint under the black. This color isn't present anywhere else but also no signs of them being changed. Arms are actually mahogany which usually points towards Boston, sometimes Providence. Simple bamboo turnings make me think CT valley. On the front of the...
