90 points Wine Spectator: "Muscular, with solid loam, raspberry, blackberry, fig paste and coffee notes backed by a broad, dark, toasty finish. Rock-solid. Drink now through 2010." (02/09) One of the hardest panels of people to please is our staff here at K&L. Much more difficult than approval by the fashionistas on Oscar night, harder than the judging of any of the last three Marques vs. Vasquez fights, and tougher than judging gymnastics at the Olympics, they are simply brutal. Think you have...

This wine comes from 30 year old estate vines on their own root stock and it is aged obviously for a very short time in French oak barrels, 10% new. There is some Bordeaux-like earthiness in the wine's aroma, but it is the mouth-filling full flavor that sold me on this happy discovery. A very good value and an unusually good find for this appellation.

"Deep ruby. Smoky aromas of dark cherry, beef jerky and cured tobacco. Redcurrant and cherry flavors display good concentration, with dusty tannins providing shape. Very cabernet, with good finishing grip and clarity." 87 points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, Mar/Apr 09

The ‘bonne bouche' at our 4/21 Tasters Guild Terre Rouge dinner at Quarter Bistro, this was served with Pappardelle Vesuvio. From the oldest syrah vineyard in the Sierra Foothills (planted in 1982), the wine was aged 23 months in Francois Freres barrels, 1/3 new, and bottled unfiltered (as the deep stain on base of the corks betrayed!).Well, this truly was grand! The amplitude, the maturity, the depth and complexity–everything ratcheted up a couple of notches. Wow! Breathtaking fruit and oak concentrations...

"Solid, with a straightforward core of black currant, fig, coffee and loam notes that push through the full-bodied finish, while hints of grilled herb and tobacco hang in the background." 89 points - Wine Spectator, May 31, 2009

"Ruby-red. Fresh redcurrant and cherry aromas, with a subtle floral quality adding interest. Juicy red fruit flavors are a touch jammy and betray none of the green qualities that are common for cabernet in this price range. Finishes with good clarity and lingering sweetness. This is a superb value and delivers more fruit punch than cabernets costing three times as much." 87 points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, Mar/Apr 09

"Give Santa Rita a good Cabernet vintage like 2005 and they will make good wines from the top down to the everyday level. The latter category is well represented with this exuberant, balanced wine. The nose is ripe but natural, while the cherry and berry flavors rush over the palate and roll along the finish. Very nice in this price range." ~M.S.

"Santa Ema seems to be striving for the ripest possible style they can get, and along the way they have found that while also losing some elegance. It starts with sweet, jammy aromas that are not far from melted red licorice. The palate is saturated with berry flavors, while the feel is thick but slightly flat. Could use more edge and compexity, but on the plus side its lush and pleasant." 88 points - Wine Enthusiast, December 31, 2008
