Saumur-Champigny is one of the newer AOCs in the Loire. It is named for the village of Champigny whose name comes from the latin Campus Ignus or "field of fire." This shows that even in Roman times, Champigny was recognized as having a special hotter microclimate. The warmer temperatures make the production of top quality red wines possible; Saumur-Champigny wines have more body and thicker texture than the wines from the neighboring Saumur.

From chalky, clay soil and low yielding vineyards comes this 100% cabernet franc-based red that is aged traditionally in large vats in Fouet's centuries old cellars carved into the tufa stone hillside. Bottled unfiltered, this is another lush, concentrated wine from this outstanding red wine vintage in the Loire. It has an explosive nose of dried cherry, blackberries, lavender, sweet red plums and mineral. The wine is very dense and juicy and will change what you think about these so called "light...

The vineyard practices of Roches Neuves are strenuous and it is easily noticed in the purity and focus of their wines. This Cabernet Franc wine comes entirely from estate vineyards that are both organic and certified biodynamic a practice that far exceeds the grasp of mere organics
winemaking as spirit. Bright and deep, the wine is both plush and lively on the palate and exhibits raspberry and cassis essences and a chiseled texture that finishes long, rich and juicy. Retasted recently (and...

Delicious, friendly Loire Valley Cabernet Franc. Darker fruits, violets and black, white & pink peppercorns. Strong fruit, fleshy & velvety mouthfeel, perfectly spicy. Unusually tasty by itself (for a Loire Cab Franc) but definitely best with salmon, pork and herbed roast vegis.

Domaine des Roches Neuves Saumur Champigny
Tufa soils give this wine its typicity. Half the wine goes through a pre-fermentation maceration (cold soak) for 5 days to refine the tannins and extract superior fruit characteristics. Look for dark, garnet color with an intense nose of red-berry fruits and a whiff of cocoa. Gorgeous! The palate is mouthfilling and deliciously accessible, packed with raspberries and chocolate notes.

The Loire Valley extends from West to East following the Loire River. (For anyone who has been to one of my classes-the river runs through it!). The appellation of Saumur Champigny is a very note-worthy region of the Loire. The main red wine grape there is Cabernet Franc, also known as Breton, and this wine is produced from 100% of that grape. Cabernet Franc is particularly well suited to cool, inland climates such as the middle Loire, where this wine is produced. The wines of this region are distinguished...

The Foucault brothers Nady and Charlie are the owners of Clos Rougeard, and in France, at least, their wines have certainly achieved Cult-like status with every three-star restaurant in Paris hustling to get a small allocation. Not surprisingly, hardly anyone in American has even heard of Clos Rougeard. Well, we're here to change all that. This estate has been in the family for several generations. The Foucault brothers tend exceptional vineyards, harvest at small yields, vinify in barrel, let the...

Clos Rougeard-Saumur Champigny-2005
2005 is one of best vintages for Loire Cab Franc in memory. Clos Rougeard's wines are as good as Loire Cab Franc gets. Rich & concentrated fruit, bright acidity and classic mineral definition. Intensity, complexity, ageability, mystery, power...it's the vinous equivalent of Moby Dick, or War & Peace!

It’s mostly tourists who ask for the wonderful Cabernet Francs of France’s Loire valley, because to the rest of the world, these wines are a secret. Light to medium-bodied and dry, they offer the fragrance of fresh-cut grass and snipped herbs over flavors of wild berry fruit. Best slightly chilled with light foods. Staff Review: Prestige “This hot weather I’ve created means you can only drink well-chilled white wines!” said Mother Nature. “But there are many light bodied reds from the Loire valley...
