Clematis is easy to grow in a rich, porous, alkaline soil with plenty of room for the roots to spread. Best performance is when the tops are in full sunlight and the roots are shaded, so apply a generous mulch or a shallow-rooted groundcover near the base of the vine. For profuse flowers in a lush, saturated red, Rouge Cardinal is a tough act to beat. Gorgeous grown on a light colored fence or other pale background where the ruby blooms contrast sharply. Petals have a trio of parallel ridges to add intestes and flowers are accented by a tuft of ivory anthers. Rouge Cardinal prefers in-ground locations to containers. I love the Jackmanii Clematis not only because of it's beautiful blooms but this is one plant that the deer didn't bother in my yard. Then we had to move so I took my chances and dug it up with the trellis and moved it to our new home, it adjusted to it's new home without missing a bloom.

The Red Clematis has masses of magnificent red, 4-6" blooms that will stand out against the deep green foliage to make this one of the showiest Clematis. Petals have a rich, velvety sheen. The Red Clematis blooms from June until September. Plant these bright, flowering vines 3-4' apart.

Comments: Abundant blooms, compact growth, tolerates full sun but does best in light shade. Plant by other low plants or mulch around base to keep roots cool and moist. Also best given a winter mulch around base and removing in early spring before growth starts. Liked by butterflies. Deer resistant. Good resistance to P & D problems. Watch for Wilt which can affect clematis.
