grapes come from Estate Vineyards planted in 1994 -- this 2005 is first vintage where winemaker felt grapes were ready to be bottled separately as a varietal wine. grapes were vinified in new Quinta do Vallado red winery in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, each holding a maximum of four tons of grapes, with manual remontage. After malolactic fermentation took place resulting wine was aged 20 onths in French Allier Oak barriques (60% in one year old barrels, 40% in new barrels). With a dark crimson color, this Touriga Nacional boasts great concentration and aromas of red fruit and violets, with balsamic oak notes. taste is sweet, round and mature, with silky tannins. A small portion of the grapes in Quinta do Vallado are still crushed by foot. After fermentation, 80% is aged in stainless steel while 20% is put in one year old French oak barrels for 11 months. This plum-red wine displays concentrated aromas of ripe red fruit, rose, and violet. The palate is robust and round, with flavors of raspberry, blackberry and currant. The Touriga National comes from 25 year old vines, and was raised for 8 months in American oak. Its texture is soft and very rounded from the oak. It shows modest intensity, some grip on the finish. There is some really nice, juicy fruit here.
