Dating back to the 19th century, the pie safe served as a storage unit for food. The trademark perforated panels, typically made of tin, provided ventilation for the edible contents as well as protection from flies and other insects. The perforations created sharp indented edges. The tin panels were traditionally set so these edges were on the outside of the tin, in order to frustrate crawling bugs from entering the pie safe. The color and side tins are wonderful on this old country pie safe but it has its drawbacks so that is why the price is so low. No doors, no back and no back legs. I have it against a wall in my cottage. Stands fine there. Notice the side tins have a mustard color and the case is still it's original dry red paint. Here are some pictures of the piesafe in my brick smokehouse at home. The inside opening measures 35" across x 36" high x 17" front to back. The top is 17.5" front to back x 40" wide....
