Generous, warm climate Shiraz is immediately apparent - mirrored by rich Christmas pudding, plum and cherry aromas. Spice and demi-glace secondary notes add to the aromatic interest. Flashes of liquorice, white chocolate and cinnamon arise with a swirl. Medium-bodied and mouth filling, plummy, berried fruits mesh with dark chocolate, mocha and spice notes. The 2003 Bin 28 is true to its fleshy, well structured style with ripe tannins and balanced acidity.

"Gamy flavors intrude on the ripe berry core in this supple, generous red, but the fruit and spice character wins out in the end, and the finish lingers expressively. Best from 2010 through 2016. 15,500 cases imported."

Penfolds Bin 28 is a showcase for warm-climate Australian Shiraz - ripe, robust and generously flavored without reliance on new oak or excessive alcohol. First made in 1962, Bin 28 is named after the famous Barossa Valley Kalimna vineyard purchased by Penfolds in 1945 and from which the wine was originally sourced. Today, Bin 28 is a multi-region, multi-vineyard blend that shows very clear, ripe fruit definition when young, with plenty of concentration and fruit sweetness, and minimal oak influence

The palate shows a continuum of generous Shiraz varietal prune notes, plum fruits and assorted spices. The wine is plush, yet still tightly structured, with a substantial mid-palate. The noticeable tannins are youthful and powdery. The 2005 Bin 28 is true to style and offers significant aging potential.

A deepened crimson with a purple core. The nose is complex and beguiling, with notes of demi-glace and roasting pan juices, beneath scents of pipe tobacco, vanilla and pencil shavings oak - much more than just a simple varietal offering. The palate is full-bodied, refined and taut showing dark, black conserve fruit flavors with Satsuma plum notes to the fore. Further liqueur chocolate and spice flavors are impregnated by overt, chewy and ripe tannins. To sum up, the integrated fruit, oak and acid...

The Kalimna vineyard is one of the finest red wine vineyards in Australia and produces a portion of the wine for Grange. Some of the vines here are as old as one hundred and produce intensely flavoured fruit that was the inspiration of Bin 28. Today the Kalimna vineyard continues to play an integral part in Bin 28, although, like most of the Penfolds red wines, this wine is a multi regional blend. Although oak maturation is an integral part of this wine's character, very little of the oak used is...

- While it is true that the greatest strides in Australian winemaking have come in the last 30 years or so, commercial viticulture began as early as the 1820s and has developed uninterrupted ever since. The majority of the great Region are in the southeastern area of the continent, with the Barossa Valley, Claire Valley, McLaren Vale, and Coonawarra in South Australia, the Yarra Yarra Velley and Pyrenees in Victoria and the Upper and Lower Hunter Valleys in New South Wales. Many of the wines from...

This is a rare chance to try an outstanding Aussie Shiraz at the peak of maturity. The Kalimna Vineyard in South Australia's Barossa Valley is one of the finest sites on the continent for Shiraz grapes. The iconic Penfolds Grange - the most sought after of all Aussie reds - is nearly always sourced partly from the Kalimna Vineyard. Most Shiraz wines we see are quite young, but we had a rare opportunity to secure some library selection Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz bottles from Penfolds. Made from Kalimna...

Firm in texture, with a peppery edge to the spicy blueberry and currant flavors, the fruit poking through a layer of chewy tannins on the long, expressive finish. Best after 2009. 10,000 cases imported. -HS
