The icon painting of Mary and the baby Jesus, sometimes referred to as the Black Madonna, resides in the fortified monastery of Jasna Gora (Luminous Hill) in the city of Czestochowa. This Miraculous Painting of the Mother of God was brought to Poland in 1384 by the Pauline Monks. Mary, Queen of Poland as she is revered has been the object of pilgrimages ever since. The painting is enhanced with glitter and a gold matte finish. 3.75" diameter, individually boxed.

Although the icon of Our Lady of Czestochowa, also known as the Black Madonna, has been intimately tied with Poland for the past six hundred years, its history prior to its arrival is shrouded in numerous legends which trace the icon's origin back to St. Luke who, it is believed, painted it on a cypress table top from the home of the Holy Family. The miracles and devotion to her date back to as early as 326AD in Constantinople, where it is said she resided for 500 years before she moved to Poland.

In 1382 the painting received an injury from invading Tartar's. An arrow pierced it leaving a scar that is still visible on the neck. Concerned with the safety of the painting, Prince Ladislaus Opolski decided to move it to one of his castles in Upper Silesia.
