Norman Maclean Reader: Norman, Maclean, Hardcover
In his eighty-eight years , Norman Maclean (1902–90) played many parts: fisherman, logger, firefighter, scholar, teacher. But it was a role he took up late in life, that of writer, that won him enduring fame and critical acclaim—as well as the devotion of readers worldwide. Though the 1976 collection A River Runs Through It and Other Stories was the only book Maclean published in his lifetime, it was an unexpected success, and the moving family tragedy of the title novella—based largely on Maclean...

September 05, 2009: Being a retired guy who recently took up fly fishing as a hobby, I truly enjoyed Norman Maclean's masterpiece. Only fly fisherman can truly appreciate the the skills, challenges, and excitement that he describes. More importantly for me, however is his ability to bring me back to a simpler time when family values, individuality, and faith were our fundamental cornerstones. His writing style placed me in the middle of everything that was happening and I was totally...

John Griffith London came from a poor family and, as a boy, dropped out of school to sell newspapers and do odd jobs to survive. The boy went to sea, was a gold miner in the Klondike, and worked as a war correspondent; he was also jailed for vagrancy, a traumatic experience that reinforced his deep distrust of the capitalist system and his embrace of socialism. London's fiction is imbued with the rugged living he experienced...

September 21, 2006: Overall this was a fair book about the fire. I felt that the author did too much regarding his personal feelings and spent a lot of time talking about treking up and down the gulch, dehydration, his horse and if he would trip / fall. When he did cover fire science it was very informative. It took too long for him to finally reach the pinnicle of the book - retracing the steps and final minutes of the smoke jumpers. I could not read it in one sitting - much of the...

March 01, 2007: Fly-fishing is one of the most confusing and precise sports that exist. The detail that is necessary to master such a craft is immense and every inch of that detail is passed along through Maclean's book. Paying such attention to details is what adds pleasure to reading his book. The details portrayed in the fly-fishing allow for one to feel as if they are learning to fly fish while enjoying a story. Details were prominent within the thoughts and actions of the brothers...
