Monte Antico Rosso 2004
"Delicious fruit, velvety, extract-fraught texture, full body, beautiful finish and superb balance. Dark ruby in color, its bouquet of leather, earth, herbs, black cherries, licorice and plums is confirmed on the medium to full-bodied palate - round, spicy, elegant, excellent cellar life (8-10 years)."

Sangiovese Italy's most planted grape variety is at the heart of some of the most beloved wines in the country. Grown all over the region, but especially in Central Italy, Sangiovese is the only grape allowed in Brunello di Montalcino, and the main grape in Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Chianti, and countless other delicious Italian blends. Sangiovese has shown itself in recent years to be an excellent... Read more Tuscany When you think of Tuscan wine, think of Sangiovese, the grape that is...

Anyway, the Monte Antico is bottled now in a screw cap instead of a cork. But they brought both a corked bottle and a screw-capped one. To make a long story short, the screw cap was so much better than the corked one. It is richer, more fruity, and fresher than the bottle with the cork. It even was darker in color. Granted, the Monte Antico is a red to drink young and fresh, in other words, on release. So it makes sense to have a screw cap. But it's another example of when a screw cap works better...

It's in the very good to outstanding range. The win e is 75 percent Sangiovese. It is made from 25 year old vines minimum. The quality of the 2006 vintage in Tuscany shined through on this wine. This is a superb Sangiovese year. The aromatic quality of Sangiovese is mind blowing for most wines from Tuscany. The 2006 Monte Antico has beautiful plums, berries and fresh acidity. Fantastico!

Italy is the birthplace of most wines. The Romans brought these grapes vines out to Spain, Portugal, France, Germany, and populated the world with wines. Italy still produces and consumes a huge amount of wine, although not much gets out to the rest of the world. Most non-Italians only know of Chianti, the delicious red, or maybe Soave, the poetic white, or perhaps even Asti Spumanti, the sparkling dessert wine. Learn about them all!
