"Dorothy Day, is a modern Catholic saint in the tradition of St. Francis. Her book is an absorbingly well-written series of pictures of her work and that of those she has gathered around her connection with the Catholic Worker, its hospitality house and its community farm. I rejoice with the new hope for mankind because of the kind of work that she and her associates are doing."- Norman Thomas

Squares on circles on more squares create a visual gateway, leading the eye toward the figure they frame. Surrounded by cool shades of blue, a woman sits alone. Her body language reveals her solitude as she draws herself inward. Yet her gaze beckons the viewer with quiet urgency in this portrait by Edwin León Pérez. Titled "Soledad" in Spanish.

September 26, 2009: The first few chapters worried me because the anecdotes seemed overdone and poorly written, but then the writing moved into the authoritative, clean, concise style that lasted the rest of the book, so I enjoyed the writing overall. There is a ton of interesting information, lots of research and studies explained in the book. This isn't a one-night read, some of the information takes a little while to process so don't be surprised if you read some of the paragraphs...

In this incisive and controversial book, Richard Stivers rejects genetic explanations of psychological problems, arguing instead that the very organization of technological societies is behind the pervasive experience of loneliness. In its extreme form, loneliness assumes pathological dimensions in neurosis and schizophrenia, which reflect the contradiction between power and meaninglessness that characterizes modern life. Loneliness, in its many manifestations, seems to be the price we must pay for...

The reason why I put this book together is because I know what it is like. Loneliness is a topic that is very close to my heart because I have been through the depths of empty, meaningless feelings many times and I am not new to that kind of feeling. But I have good news for all of us lonely hearts out there. I have survived through and I have a way to solve it if not ease the pain at least. My stories and writings in this book aim to accomplish a few things: * Understanding the theory behind...

Loneliness of a Long Distance Runner
Alan Sillitoe's autobiographical novel about a rebellious 18-year-old living in dreary Lancashire proved to be the perfect material for Tony Richardson to adapt in the early 1960s. The film stars Tom Courtenay as the disaffected Colin Smith, who ends up in a Borstal, or reform school, after robbing a bakery. The Governor (Sir Michael Redgrave), the institution's chief authority, believes in physical training as a means of rehabilitating his charges. Despite his contempt for all authority, Colin one...

Loneliness in Marriage I-II
As many married couples can attest, sharing a bed does not an intimate relationship make. Family experts Dennis and Barbara Rainey join Dr. Dobson to discuss the emptiness many husbands and wives experience, the need we all have for true connectedness, and ways couples can draw closer together.

A New Kind of Loneliness
Description On his seventh solo recording, the onetime founder and lead singer/songwriter of Britain's popular alternative country band the Good Sons continues to celebrate the art of crafting songs that are all at once arena rock engaging, folksy, lyrically pointed, and a lot of fun. For the most part, he's in full traditional low-key heartfelt strumming troubadour mode -- most notably on reflective tunes like the dramatic "The Last Hurrah," "My Heart Stopped Today" (featuring gorgeous harmony vocal...

Dumm (political science, Amherst Coll.; A Politics of the Ordinary ) sets out to examine the emotional state of loneliness and its relationship to the modern world. He explains that the topic of loneliness cannot be studied by using solely analytic tools because of its "isolating qualities." This barrier forces Dumm to take a unique approach in examining the relationship between our everyday existence and loneliness. He uses the works of past writers and philosophers such as Shakespeare, Thoreau...

I have painted Lee many times but always find that the angle of the head or the lighting is different every time. I solve problems of this type by working with a head sculpture of Lee and lighting it with a flashlight to get the desired lighting effect and angle. Then I do preliminary charcoal sketches. By following this kind of procedure, I ensure that I will paint the best possible Lee I can do.
