Until the 1990's Chilean wine producers thought that this grape was Merlot. Carmenere is originally from Bordeaux and has many similarities to Merlot and Cabernet but with a supple character and a peppery, tobacco-y spice. This wine is from the high elevation vineyards of the Casa Donoso Estate in the Maule Valley, where there are ideal conditions for growing Carmenere. Soft but lively, supple but spicy and fruity. It shows intriguing character of the signature grape of Chile. A great value.
