Originally part of a Spanish land grant that covered 4,000 acres, La Jota Vineyard was built and operated by Frederick Hess until Prohibition. Turned over to prunes and pigs, the winery and land were in disrepair when Bill Smith purchased La Jota in 1974 from a group of San Francisco investors. Commuting from the Peninsula on weekends, Bill and his wife Joan, enlisted the help of family and friends to establish a vineyard, and spent hours irrigating each vine by hand. A growing passion for wine,...

The 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is a beauty, with dark ruby/purple color and a big sweet nose of tobacco leaf intermixed with black currant, black cherry, new saddle leather, and white chocolate. The wine is full-bodied, powerful, with superb purity, texture, and length. It’s approachable now but promises to be better in 3-4 years, and last for at least 15 or more. As I said last year, this relatively new producer is off to a flying start. Winemaker Sean Capiaux (who has his own Pinot...

90 points Robert Parker: "The 1986 Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon still boasts an opaque dark garnet color. In addition, it remains tannic, backward, and youthful. The wine possesses admirable power and richness, but it is interesting to contrast the type of tannin in the 1986 (astringent, bitter, hard, and intrusive) with the style of tannin La Jota has achieved since 1992 (sweet, well-integrated, and ripe). This wine may turn out to be outstanding, but it is no sure bet, particularly when compared...

La Jota - Cabernet Sauvignon - Howell Mountain
"The 1991 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is 4-6 years away from enjoyable drinking. It is a dense, full-bodied, bruiser of a wine, with an opaque color, and a promising but restrained bouquet of minerals, smoke, and blackcurrants. Full-bodied, rich, and intense, as well as tannic and backward, it is a wine made for the long term rather than immediate drinkability. This is an immensely impressive Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink 1998 or after" RP-93

Classic Cabernet in every sense of the word! Cassis , black cherry, tobacco briar and toasty, vanilla oak are only the beginning. Jammy fruit flirts with bitter chocolate, and the whole is complemented by a violet-scented bouquet. After ten years of production, this Cabernet has hit its stride and each vintage claims its own set of admirers.

Description Tasting Notes - The 2006 Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits rich, mountain-fruit intensity. Opulent aromas with a rich nose of cassis, nuances of wild strawberry and forest-earth. A small blend of Merlot, capped by some Petit Verdot provide broad tannins and spice. Black currant fruits, plum and blueberries give this wine a rich and full bodied flavor.

Rated 91 points by the Wine Spectator: "A massive concentration of fruit, tannin and peppery cassis flavors that are rich and well defined but slightly raw and dry now. Hands off for seven years. Even then beware of drinking it alone. Drink from 1995 to 2000."

Initially, cherry cola, dark berry and vanilla bean aromas flood from the glass; then back notes of rosemary and mineral emerge as vivid reminders of the vineyard site. The palate exhibits a ripe cherry, pomegranate and fresh herb/earth character, carried through a long finish by the wines velvety tannins.

Made world-famous by W.S Keyes who set out his original vineyards in 1880, the Howell Mountain region has been the source of exceptionally bold, full-bodied, and long-aging wines. The distinctive character of the fruit, primarily Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, is enhanced by dry herb and mineral notes. In 1983 Howell Mountain became Napa Valley's first American Viticultural Area ? AVA. The Howell Mountain AVA, whose boundaries are defined by the 1,400 foot elevation contour line, owes its distinctive...

If you have not tasted a Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley's famed Howell Mountain, this is a wine you must try. If you have, then you know why you can not pass up this wine. Summit Lake has everything that is deliciously wonderful about Howell Mountain: deeply concentrated and complex wines. The wine provides ripe and richly concentrated dark raspberry, dark cherry, blackberry and plum fruits with waves of soft oak, spice, toffee and hints of expresso. This wine will take center stage at any...
