Morellino di Scansano is a small DOC in the Maremma, the more rugged and less populous southern part of Tuscany near the sea. No longer a haven for cattle grazing, you can now find Sangiovese vineyards in some areas, like Scansano which has volcanic soils. The region produces red wines with an interesting bouquet and complexity that has created a following for the wines of Scansano. Morellino is Sangiovese but, in the Grossetto area, it has more charm than some austere Chiantis. It is a little sweeter and the concentration is extreme. Dark juice, delicious aromas of red berries, leather, and cedar box. Medium to full-bodied with smooth tannins; many layers of fruit; and a long finish. Can age 4 to 6 years. Drinks well now but will continue to improve.
